Jean-Pierre Balpe is a poet and writer. Alongside teaching at university level, he has also run the Hypermedia Department, the Paragraphe Laboratory at the Paris VIII University, as well as the CITU (University center for Research, Experimentation and Artistic creation). His work combines artistic creation, teaching and research, and is essentially based on studying interactivity in electronic literature. He wrote the initial script for Shanghai-Paris, the interactive TV show. He then started focusing on generative literature, and since 1989, he has developed writing software which he used for Un roman inachevé (1995), ROMANS (novel) (1996), Trajectoires. He has also created performing arts shows: Trois mythologies et un poète aveugle (1997, in association with Jacopo Baboni-Schilingi), the Barbe Bleue opera (in association with the composer Alexandre Raskatov) which was based on computer-generated music, text and scenography. 
In 1999, he was granted the Multimedia award by the “Société des Gens de Lettres” (the Society of Men of Letters of France) for the novel La toile.
